Here at EITR we perform straight razor shaves on a regular basis, and while we don’t expect you to learn how to use a straight razor, we hope that, for the sake of your manhood, you value being educated on how to shave properly. First off you will need a few items to facilitate the best possible shave. Below is a list of what you will need:

  • Pre-shave oil
  • Traditional safety razor(preferred) or Fusion razor
  • Shave soap w/ shave bowl or shave cream
  • Aftershave balm or aftershave spray and moisturizer
  • (Optional- pure badger brush, hot towel)

STEP 1 – Prepare

Apply pre-shave oil, carefully massaging it into the face to create a protective barrier and improve razor glide. Next, soak a clean small towel, wring it and place it in a microwave for 30 seconds. Being careful not to scold the skin, place towel over your face to soften up the beard and open pores. For the best results, shave after (or during) a hot shower.

STEP 2 – Lather

Using the pure badger brush create a rich lather with shave soap and bowl, or apply shaving cream with fingertips onto face . Carefully work lather into the beard against the growth pattern of the hair. Get an even lather throughout the beard. This ensures s smooth shave by maintaining the beard soft.

STEP 3 – Shave
Dip a clean razor blade into hot water. Then using gentle pressure, shave with the grain of your beard. Taking note of the different growth patterns throughout the beard. Once finished, if a closer shave is desired, re-lather in the same manner and shave gently against the grain. (Note: Some men’s skin sensitivity wont allow them to shave against the grain.)
STEP 4 – Moisturize

After shaving, rinse your face thoroughly with cold water and pat dry with a clean towel. If desired, apply a cold towel as well. Use either and aftershave balm, or or an aftershave spray combined with a light moisturizer. The purpose being to revitalize and soothe your skin after shaving.

There are many options when it comes to razors, shaving soaps and creams, badger brushes and aftershave balms. Each man is different, and finding your own style is part of the fun that comes with perfecting the shave. By practicing these steps you can master a shave so close it can only rivaled by a professional barbers straight razor shave.
